Tragic Shooting

On September 4th, a devastating shooting occurred at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, leaving the community in shock and mourning. A 14-year-old student, Colt Gray, is the suspected shooter.

Victims and Casualties

The shooting claimed the lives of four individuals – two 14-year-old students, Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, as well as two teachers, Richard Aspinwall and Christina Irimie. Nine other people, including eight students and one teacher, were wounded in the attack but survived.

Suspect’s History and Weapon Used

Authorities revealed that Gray was in an investigation last year for making online threats to commit a school shooting. There was no probable cause for arrest at the time. The weapon used in the attack was an AR-platform-style rifle. Investigators are still looking into how the 14-year-old was able to bring the firearm onto the school campus. 

Immediate Response

The suspect surrendered immediately to a school resource officer and will be an adult with murder. In the wake of the tragedy, they will close schools in the county for the week as part of the investigation continues. 

Community Support

The local community has rallied together to support the victims and their families, with neighbours providing food, water, and other supplies to those affected. State and federal officials, including the FBI and ATF, are assisting with the ongoing investigation. 

As the Apalachee High School community grapples with this senseless act of violence. The nation once again finds itself confronting the devastating impact of gun violence in schools. The path forward will undoubtedly be difficult. The resilience and compassion shown by the community offer hope in the face of such tragedy.

Ongoing Investigation

State and federal officials, including the FBI and ATF, are assisting with the investigation into the shooting. Authorities have stated that there is no evidence of other schools being targeted, but they are pursuing any leads related to potential associates of the shooter.
