After 20 years in office, Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has announced his intention to step down. This paves the way for Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong to become the new Prime Minister on May 15. Wong will also lead the long-ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) into the next general election.

Lee Hsien Loong, who has been Prime Minister since 2003, is stepping down, and Lawrence Wong, 51, will take over. Wong is seen as a strong leader, having shown his skills during the COVID-19 pandemic. He has also held various important roles, giving him broad experience.

Challenges Ahead

He steps into the role at a challenging time. The PAP faces stronger opposition in parliament and recent internal issues, including a corruption scandal involving a senior minister. Wong will need to address these problems and prepare for the next general election.

Economic and Social Issues

Singapore’s economy is affected by global instability, including the rivalry between the US and China. Wong will need to balance relations with both countries. Domestically, he faces concerns about the cost of living, inequality, and immigration. Wong aims to modernize and expand Singapore’s social welfare system.

A New Era

Wong is Singapore’s first leader born after its independence in 1965 and only the second not from the Lee family. He comes from a humble background, which may help him connect with ordinary Singaporeans. Wong is also known for his relatable style, even sharing a video of himself playing guitar on social media.

Vision for the Future

In his inauguration speech, Wong promised to continue the work of past leaders and adapt to new global challenges. He emphasized that Singapore must stay strong and innovative to face a messier, riskier world. Wong aims to make incremental changes to the political system and involve Singaporeans in shaping the country’s future. Wong’s immediate priorities will include addressing the rising cost of living, housing affordability, and job security. “Bread-and-butter issues remain vital even for a prosperous country, partly because of Singapore’s innate vulnerabilities,” he said.

“This is my promise to all Singaporeans. I will serve you with all my heart. I will never settle for the status quo. I will always seek better ways to make tomorrow better than today,”
